March is National Nutrition Month®! We are excited to join the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in celebrating this annual tradition. Each year since 1973, the Academy has launched this campaign to educate the public about healthy food-related and physical activity habits.
Announcing the theme for 2025’s National Nutrition Month!
Each year the campaign centers around a specific theme, and this year is no exception. The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month is…(drumroll please)… “Food Connects Us”!
According to EatRight.org, this theme “addresses that food is a connecting factor for many of us. Food connects us to our cultures, our families and our friends. Sharing a meal is an opportunity to learn about its preparation, who made it and where the ingredients were sourced. Health, memories, traditions, seasons and access can all impact our relationship with food. While these factors influence the foods we eat, the foods we eat also affect our health.”
The themes may change, but the goal of National Nutrition Month is the same each year: To provide resources, tips and education and also to remind the public that Registered Dietitians are experts at all things nutrition-related!
National Nutrition Month’s Weekly Themes
Every week of March has a theme that relates to the overarching theme of “Food Connects Us.” Here’s where we should focus our energy and attention each week as we celebrate National Nutrition Month:
- Week 1: Connect with Food
- Week 2: Connect with a Nutrition Expert
- Week 3: Explore the Connection Between Food and Culture
- Week 4: Build the Connection Across All Stages of Life
Below, we dive a little more deeply into each week’s theme.
Week 1: Connect with Food
During week one of National Nutrition Month, we focus on connecting with food. This week encourages us to take a step back and appreciate the nourishment food provides, not just for our bodies, but for our overall well-being. It’s about reconnecting with wholesome ingredients, learning how to make informed food choices, and celebrating the joy of eating in a way that nurtures our health.
One way to connect with food is by learning the basics of meal planning, food prep, and cooking. This may sound obvious. However without these skills, we can explore where your food comes from. It encourages us to support responsible farming methods, reduce waste, and embrace a more conscious way of eating. This deeper connection can inspire a renewed sense of gratitude for the nourishment we receive and spark a commitment to preserving the planet’s resources for future generations.
Finally for anyone having difficulty putting food on the table, learn about community resources that can help such as SNAP and WIC. You can also find a food bank near you by clicking this link.
Week 2: Connect with a Nutrition Expert
During week 2 of National Nutrition Month, the Academy encourages more people to connect with a Nutrition Expert aka Registered Dietitian (RDN). An RDN can help you achieve your health goals. If you are unsure where to start, ask your doctor for a referral. Above all, find an RDN who can provide individualized nutrition guidance based on your unique needs.
Keep in mind that an RDN can provide personalized recommendations for optimal nutrition at any stage of life. At Anderson’s Nutrition, our dietitians have a wide range of specialties, and can provide nutrition guidance throughout the stages of life. Our programs include preventing or managing specific medical conditions; reaching and maintaining a healthy weight; pediatric nutrition; proper fueling for athletic performance; and even eating disorder treatment. Week 3: Explore the Connection Between Food and Culture
During week 3 of National Nutrition Month, the focus is on exploring the connection between food and culture. Your body thrives on diversity. Therefore include your favorite cultural foods and traditions. These can provide comfort, high quality nutrients, and joy! Also try new foods or global cuisines, which are a great way to introduce different sources of nutrients. In addition, focus on eating a variety of forms including fresh, frozen, canned and dried foods, all of which have value. Experiment with recipes using different ingredients and cooking techniques. And most of all, have fun!
Week 4: Build the Connection Across All Stages of Life
During week 4 of National Nutrition Month, the goal is to build the connection across all life stages. This is a crucial step towards a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle as we age. In infancy, proper nutrition supports growth and development, while childhood and adolescence focus on building strong foundations for a healthy future. As we transition into adulthood, maintaining a balanced diet is key to preventing chronic conditions and sustaining energy. Later in life, nutrition continues to play a vital role in maintaining vitality and managing age-related health concerns. By prioritizing good nutrition and making informed choices at every stage, we empower ourselves to live our healthiest lives.
