Did you know?

Just over 10% of the adult population has been diagnosed with food allergies and according to the CDC, food allergies are on the rise. Food allergy reactions are serious and can be life-threatening! Unfortunately, many people who experience food allergies report a decreased quality of life.

It can be difficult and frustrating to manage food allergies.

A food allergy happens when the immune system attacks the food that would normally be harmless. Reactions differ but can be very serious. There have been reports for more than 170 foods that can cause reactions, but there are eight major allergens that are responsible for the most serious reactions, including anaphylaxis.

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Fish
  • Crustacean shellfish

Keep in mind that even trace amounts can cause a reaction. A diet that avoids the allergen can seem restrictive, but it is always individualized, which is why it is crucial to work with a registered dietitian for your meal planning and shopping.

Food intolerances are different than allergies. Food intolerances include the body’s inability to fully digest an ingredient, including lactose intolerance, sensitivity to food additives, or IBS. Stress can even cause indigestion or altered bowel movements/pain. Celiac disease has some similarities to a true food allergy because it involves the immune system, however, those with celiac are not at risk of anaphylaxis. However, just because these reactions are not as intense as a food allergy, they still require individualized planning and attention.
