This testing pinpoints the caloric intake required for weight loss, maintenance, or weight gain, so you can better understand your baseline energy requirements (Resting Energy Expenditure- REE). The REE makes up for about 60-70% of total energy expenditure daily.

How Metabolic Testing Works
REEVUE is a direct oxygen measurement, calculating oxygen exhaled to calculate caloric burn. Using indirect calorimetry, the “gold standard” for metabolic rate, the chamber is able to accurately measure the ratio of oxygen consumption to exhalation, to analyze metabolism.
Benefits of Metabolic Testing
- Establish a minimum number of calories your body needs to function at complete rest, without slowing down your metabolic rate.
- Determine if your chronic dieting or history of significant weight fluctuations has influenced the efficiency of your body.
- Better understand your total energy needs on a day of exercise compared to a rest and recovery day.
- Eliminate use of standard calculations for estimated energy needs.
- Faster physical results, including weight loss, gain, or body recomposition.
What To Expect
Preparing for your test:
This non-invasive test takes about 10-15 minutes. You only need to sit back, relax, and breathe during the test. We will use a disposable MetaBreather mouthpiece, which uses a one-time value to measure inhalation and exhalation.
- Avoid eating or drinking 4-5 hours before testing
- Avoid exercise the day of testing
- Avoid stimulants, such as caffeine, the day of testing (or at least 8 hours prior)
- Avoid over-the-counter medications or dietary supplements the day of testing.
- Wear comfortable clothes
Your Results
Once your test is complete, you will get a full report, calculating your total energy burn throughout the day. You can use this report to work with your Registered Dietitian and other healthcare providers to understand your metabolism better and create a customized treatment plan.

FAQ’s
Testing Questions
How long is the test? What happens at the appointment?
The test is 10-15 minutes long. We have a quite room that you can relax in while the test is being conducted.
The appointment is scheduled for 30 minutes. Once the test is completed, a staff member will go over your test results with you.
Why cannot I exercise, drink caffeine, or eat 3-4 hours before the test?
In order to find a true resting metabolic rate, your body will need to be as relaxed as possible. Exercising, caffeine, and digestion could alter the results of the test due to increased metabolic activity.
How often should I get tested?
Metabolic adaptation takes some time to change. For best results, you should generally test every 4-6 weeks.
Results
What type of results should I see? How long does it take?
Results can be seen as soon as 1 month. It’s important to give your body time to adjust to the lifestyle changes that are being made. Testing every 4-6 weeks will give you a good idea if the changes you have implemented are working.
What if I don’t see results in 3 months?
If results aren’t seen in 3 months, then it’s best to meet with a registered dietitian or other medical provider to see if additional action needs to be taken.
Athlete Performance
Will testing my metabolic rate be helpful for athletic performance?
Nutrition is a key component to performance. As a result, testing the metabolic rate is a great addition to any training plan to understand your minimum energy requirement prior to training sessions. This will help to optimize training to help reach your max potential.
