Did you know?
It is estimated that around 37 million American adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and millions of others are at increased risk, however, early detection can prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.
Your kidneys play a crucial role in your body’s total function. Kidneys don’t just remove waste. These hard-working machines also balance fluid/minerals, regulate hormones, control blood pressure, keep bones strong, and make red blood cells.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, 1 in 3 Americans are at risk for kidney disease. Unmanaged diabetes and high blood pressure are two major modifiable risk factors for a damaged kidney, along with inevitable age and family history. If you are at risk, it’s a good idea to look out for the signs and to meet with your physician to discuss two tests that can indicate kidney function: ACR and GFR.
A few of the common kidney concerns/illnesses include
- CKD: The gradual loss of kidney function is labeled as chronic kidney disease (CKD), with stages 1-5. Typically at stage 5, one would need dialysis.
- ARF: Acute kidney failure happens at once and needs medical attention immediately.
- Kidney Stones: Kidney stones are temporary deposits of mineral/acid salts that are painful to pass through as urine. Most often, they do not cause permanent damage.
Early intervention is crucial for preventing further decline in kidney function. Nutrition plays an important role in kidney health. The kidney diet is extremely individualized, so it is important to work with a registered dietitian.
