Did you know?
If you struggle with your weight, have been recommended by your doctor to seek out weight loss surgery, and meet the requirements, bariatric surgery may be right for you. Your weight may be causing other struggles in your life, and bariatric surgery has been found to be effective in improving certain conditions. These include back pain, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, GERD/heartburn, high cholesterol, incontinence, shortness of breath, and depression.
One study shows that patients can maintain around 50% loss of extra weight 10 years post-surgery. This is maintained by following a dramatic lifestyle change, and sustaining habits along the way.
Going through weight loss surgery and the recovery can be some of the most overwhelming experiences in your life.
Before surgery, there are significant nutrition modifications that take place and it is important to follow these recommendations closely. Similarly, post-surgery requires weeks and months of a difficult diet to follow to stay satisfied and safe. To recover quickly, food and supplements are necessary in the right forms.
Evidence shows that bariatric surgery is just a tool to help you on your health journey. It is not a “quick fix” or “magic pill”. The most important for you will be the behavior modification and commitment to eating right/exercising.
- Has your doctor recommended bariatric surgery?
- Do you need to meet the qualifications for the surgery by meeting with a bariatric nutrition dietitian?
- Did you recently get bariatric surgery and need help?
- Have you been living with this life-changing experience for a while and feel stuck in a rut?
If you answered YES, we will provide a unique nutritional assessment going through medical history, concerns, and create an individualized plan that works for you with a bariatric nutrition dietitian.

Pre-Op
In order to have bariatric surgery, you must receive clearance from a dietitian. This clearance is required to ensure that the patient is aware of and prepared for the life changes after the surgery. During your appointment, your dietitian will go over all the nutritional changes you must make to ensure the surgery is successful. They will present you with a pre-op nutrition checklist and work with you to implement these changes into your lifestyle.
Your doctor may require more that one visit to a dietitian before the bariatric surgery. The number of appointments required can vary between hospitals and programs. If you are using insurance, the insurance company may also require a certain number of visits before approving the surgery. These follow ups will allow you further assistance in implementing the lifestyle changes necessary for the surgery and assist with any difficulties you are having with the preparation.

Seeing a dietitian can also help you maintain accountability with your new lifestyle, and address any problems or concerns post-surgery.
