Garlic – Flavor Booster

About Garlic

Aside from warding off vampires and mosquitoes, garlic has many uses! There has been research studies showing a correlation between lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, cancer, and improved immune system when consuming garlic.

This herb is part of the onion family. So, I guess this starts to explain a little about why it has such a strong scent, right?!?! It actually produces a chemical called allicin (al·li·cin) and when cut into causes that all familiar smell. This little powerhouse does not occur when garlic is left in the whole bulb, but is produced when it is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and more intense crushing, the greater amount of allicin that will be generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.

Purchasing Garlic

Ready to rush out and buy that supplement? Wait! We recommend that you don’t buy a supplement without talking to your doctor first as there are some potential side effects when garlic is consumed in medicinal amounts. So as always, we encourage you to stick to the food form and start adding garlic into your diet daily. Start by head over to the produce section at your local grocery store. You’ll see it in many forms, including:

1. Whole Bulb
2. Diced in a jar
3. Minced in a tube
4. Powdered – remember to keep salt out of the diet by purchasing the powder instead of garlic salt

We love to add 1 tbsp of diced garlic to a pan with olive oil and chopped vegetables like zucchini, red peppers, mushrooms and spinach. It adds such a tasty, natural flavor!
