We can give you the tools to help better manage your prediabetes. If you have prediabetes, we can provide you with a meal plan to help reduce your risk or delay the development of diabetes.
What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes means that your blood glucose (blood sugar) is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Glucose is the fuel the body needs for energy. Prediabetes often has no signs or symptoms. We don’t know the exact cause of prediabetes. Family history, genetics, inactivity, and excess fat (especially around the stomach) are risk factors. People who have prediabetes don’t process blood sugar efficiently anymore. This results in glucose building up in the bloodstream is that it is not able to enter the cells to provide fuel for energy.
Either the pancreas (the gland that makes insulin) doesn’t make enough insulin or the cells are resistant to insulin, or a combination of both. High blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol (the “good cholesterol”), and high levels of triglycerides (fat) are associated with prediabetes. Without lifestyle changes, people with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
The good news is that healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight can help normalize your blood sugars. The latest Consensus Report recommends individualized nutrition counseling for all people with diabetes and prediabetes. Evidence shows that working with an RDN can decrease A1C* by up to 2%.
The Diabetes Prevention Program showed that people with prediabetes who lost weight reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 58% over 3 years. Losing weight (5-10% of one’s starting weight) can improve insulin action and lower fasting blood sugar. Regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugars.
*A1C or HBA1C glycosylated hemoglobin is a snap shot of what your blood sugars have been averaging the past 2-3 months.
