Let your registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) help you make healthy lifestyle choices and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

We have a realistic approach that makes the process enjoyable and helps you meet your goals.  We believe in simple, small changes that will make the biggest difference in your life.

Have you been told you have prediabetes or are worried you will develop diabetes?

Have you been diagnosed with prediabetes?

Has your health provider told you your sugars are up and you need to eat better and lose weight?

Do you have a family history of diabetes?

Are you confused about what you can eat?

If you answered YES, we will provide a unique nutritional assessment going through your medical history, your concerns, and create an individualized plan that works for you.  We can give you the tools to help better manage your prediabetes. If you have prediabetes, we can provide you with a meal plan to help reduce your risk or delay the development of diabetes.

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes means that your blood glucose (blood sugar) is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  Glucose is the fuel the body needs for energy. Prediabetes often has no signs or symptoms. We don’t know the exact cause of prediabetes.  Family history, genetics, inactivity, and excess fat (especially around the stomach) are risk factors. People who have prediabetes don’t process blood sugar efficiently anymore. This results in glucose building up in the bloodstream is that it is not able to enter the cells to provide fuel for energy.

Either the pancreas (the gland that makes insulin) doesn’t make enough insulin or the cells are resistant to insulin, or a combination of both.  High blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol (the “good cholesterol”), and high levels of triglycerides (fat) are associated with prediabetes. Without lifestyle changes, people with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Evidence shows that nutrition therapy improves blood sugar, helps with weight management, and improves cardiovascular risk factors.

The good news is that healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight can help normalize your blood sugars.  The latest Consensus Report recommends individualized nutrition counseling for all people with diabetes and prediabetes.  Evidence shows that working with an RDN can decrease A1C* by up to 2%.

The Diabetes Prevention Program showed that people with prediabetes who lost weight reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 58% over 3 years.  Losing weight (5-10% of one’s starting weight) can improve insulin action and lower fasting blood sugar.  Regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugars.

*A1C or HBA1C glycosylated hemoglobin is a snap shot of what your blood sugars have been averaging the past 2-3 months.

Meeting with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for Prediabetes

Did you know that a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) is an expert in the nutrition field?

Many of the RDNs at Anderson’s Nutrition have a Master’s Degree and hold additional certifications. All of them hold the credentials of an RDN through the CDR.  An additional certification important for dietitians assisting diabetic patients is the CDCES. A CDCESCertified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist is a Certified Diabetes Educator who has experience and knowledge working with the prevention, treatment, and management of diabetes and prediabetes.
